Vaishno Devi Yatra: A Sacred Three-Day Pilgrimage

This three-day itinerary offers a spiritual journey to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. You have two excellent options for travel from Delhi to Katra, the base camp for the yatra. The day train, Vande Bharat Express (22439), departs from New Delhi at 06:00 and arrives at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 14:15, with a travel time of 8 hours and 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the overnight Jammu Rajdhani (12425) departs from New Delhi at 20:40 and reaches Jammu Tawi at 05:00 the next morning, allowing you to rest during the journey.

Day 1: Arrival in Katra

Upon your arrival at Jammu Tawi Railway Station, you will be met by a driver for a transfer to Katra. The road journey from Jammu to Katra is approximately 43 kilometers and typically takes about one hour. Katra is the vibrant base location for the Vaishno Devi Yatra, bustling with shops and pilgrims.

After checking in to your hotel and settling down, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. You can use this time to relax and prepare for the pilgrimage ahead or take a walk to explore the local market in Katra, where you can find prasad and souvenirs. You will spend the night at your hotel in Katra.

Day 2: Vaishno Devi Darshan & Yatra

After an early breakfast, you will begin your sacred pilgrimage to the Bhawan of Mata Vaishno Devi. The traditional yatra is a 14-kilometer trek from the base camp at Ban Ganga. For those who prefer alternatives, there are several options available. You can opt for the helicopter service from Katra to Sanjichhat for a quick and convenient journey. Helicopter services are subject to weather conditions and can be booked in advance.

Other options include hiring a pony or a palki (palanquin), or using the battery-operated car service, which provides an easier ascent for those unable to walk. While the main Bhawan is open for darshan 24 hours a day, the Aarti is performed at sunrise and sunset.

Along the trek, you will pass the holy Ardh Kuwari Cave, an important spot where the Goddess is believed to have meditated for nine months. Following your darshan at the main Bhawan, a visit to the Bhairavnath Temple is considered mandatory to complete the pilgrimage. This temple is located a short distance uphill from the main Bhawan and is conveniently accessible via a new ropeway, which operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

After completing your darshan and receiving the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi, you will descend back to Katra to rest and enjoy a comfortable overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 3: Departure from Katra

After a final breakfast at your hotel, you will check out and be transferred from Katra to Jammu Tawi Railway Station or the airport for your onward journey. Your return from Katra to Delhi can be a smooth and convenient ride on the Vande Bharat Express (22440), which departs from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at 14:55 and arrives at New Delhi at 23:00. The journey takes approximately 8 hours and 5 minutes, providing a comfortable return trip after your spiritual adventure.
