Here are some important tips for travelers for this entire 7-day tour of Kerala, covering various aspects from packing to local etiquette.

Before You Go

  • Packing Essentials: Pack for a mix of climates. Cochin and Alleppey are hot and humid, so lightweight cotton clothing is ideal. Munnar and Thekkady are cooler, especially in the evenings, so carry a light jacket, sweater, or shawl.

  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are a must for sightseeing in Cochin, trekking in Thekkady, and exploring Munnar. Also, pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops for the houseboat in Alleppey.

  • Monsoon Preparedness: If traveling during the monsoon season (June to September), carry an umbrella or a raincoat. Sudden showers are common.

  • Health Kit: Bring a basic medical kit with items for headaches, stomach upset, motion sickness (for the drive to Munnar and Thekkady), and any personal medications. Insect repellent is also highly recommended, especially in forested areas and on the houseboat.

  • Connectivity: While major towns have decent mobile network coverage, it can be patchy in remote areas like some parts of Munnar and Thekkady. Its a good idea to inform your family and friends.

On the Road

  • Hydration: Stay hydrated, especially during the humid days in Cochin and Alleppey. Always carry a water bottle.

  • Motion Sickness: The drive from Cochin to Munnar and Munnar to Thekkady involves winding, mountainous roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, take necessary precautions beforehand.

  • Roadside Snacks: Don't hesitate to try fresh fruits and local snacks from roadside vendors, but ensure they are prepared hygienically.

  • Early Starts: Starting your day early, especially for the long drives, will help you avoid heavy traffic and allow for more sightseeing time.

During Your Stay

  • Cochin: The historic Fort Kochi area is best explored on foot or by a bicycle. Be prepared for humid weather.

  • Munnar: The weather can change quickly. It might be sunny one moment and misty the next. Wear layers so you can adjust your clothing easily.

  • Thekkady: The boat ride in Periyar Tiger Reserve is a popular activity. Book your tickets in advance to ensure availability. The best chances of spotting wildlife are early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

  • Alleppey Houseboat: The houseboat experience is a highlight. However, electricity is limited and usually from a generator, which may be shut off at night to save fuel. It's best to charge your devices during the day. Don't forget to take a break from your phone and simply enjoy the serene backwater views.

Money & Culture

  • Cash: While major hotels and large restaurants accept cards, its wise to carry sufficient cash for smaller shops, local eateries, and tipping.

  • Bargaining: In local markets, bargaining is common and expected.

  • Dress Code: While Kerala is generally liberal, it is a good practice to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites.

  • Respect for Nature: Kerala is known as "Gods Own Country" for a reason. Be a responsible traveler by avoiding littering, especially in natural habitats like the Periyar reserve and the backwaters.
